Overview of Biology
Biology comes from the Greek words “bio” and “logos”, literally translating to "to talk about life". So it would make sense from the etymology that biology is the science about the study of life. What does that include? Biology takes a closer look at the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of all living things. We have to be able to keep track of all this information in an organized way, or it would be overwhelming, so those clever biologists came up with a system. There is a classification and description for all organisms, their functions, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the natural environment. How do we tie all that information together? Well, during your science tutoring session with us, you will explore these four foundational principles: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis.
Cell Theory
In the 19th century, scientists discovered that organisms, or living things, shared fundamental characteristics, and one of these characteristics is that all organisms are made up of cells. That means you, your parents, your sister, and your family dog are big piles of cells. What is a cell? The cell is the fundamental unit of life. Cells are so basic to existence that there a theory about them called cell theory.
Feeling a little foggy about cell theory? We have an expert Biology tutor who can explain all this vocabulary and the concepts of cell theory to you in your online tutoring session, so don't be shy about creating an account with us.
Evolution
During your studies of biology, you are bound to come across the E-word. Yep, "evolution" is the study of the change in the inherited traits of a population from one generation to the next. What is a trait? What color are your eyes? Your hair? How tall are you? These are all traits that are the expression of genes that are copied and passed on during human reproduction. Of course, traits can be found in thousands of different organisms, so this isn't just a "people" thing!
The study of evolution also includes "natural selection". What is it? Natural selection is a process that causes the traits that are inherited from parents and ancestors that are helpful for survival and reproduction to become more common, and harmful traits to become more rare. Another process, called genetic drift, produces random changes in the frequency of traits in a population. Genetic drift is left up to chance, so even the best biologist can't predict everything!
Evolution suggests one more theory: gradual divergence. Gradual divergence suggests that the similarities between all known species points to all species having one common ancestor. This has not been a rapid process happening during the past 100 years, but rather one that has happened over billions of years.
Gene Theory
How are traits passed along? We're glad you asked! This is where the Gene Theory player makes its entrance onto the Biology Stage. The form and function of species is created from and passed on to the next generation by genes, which are the primary units of inheritance. What's really neat about genes is that species from all over the biological spectrum have the same basic machinery that copies and transcribes DNA into proteins. What does that mean? It means that something as small as bacteria can be inserted with human DNA and will correctly produce the corresponding human protein.
All of the genes in an organism are called a genome, and that is stored on one or more chromosomes. Chromosomes are made up of a single long strand of DNA, which is encoded with thousands of genes which make up an organism. Do you have questions about gene theory? We have answers, so sign up for your first session to get your biology homework help today!
Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the process by which all living organisms unicellular or multicellular regulate their internal environment with multiple dynamic equilibrium adjustments, thereby maintaining a stable condition. An example of homeostasis is how warm-blooded animals maintain a constant internal body temperature. Scientists can also describe tissues and organs in terms of homeostasis, often for medical purposes. This is because oftentimes disease results from disturbance of homeostasis, a condition known as homeostatic imbalance. But homeostasis isn't just for organisms alone. It can also be used to describe an ecosystem, such as the claim that we live in a disturbed global ecosystem, resulting in the global warming phenomenon. One example of how our ecosystem may be disturbed is that scientists believe that one reason for global warming may be that the equilibrium between carbon dioxide levels has shifted, and there is more carbon dioxide in atmosphere than there has been in past history.
So let's re-cap here: When we are talking about the study of life, we are talking about biology. In order for biologists to gather all the information about all the life out there and make sense of it, they present four concepts, which create the foundation for modern biology. These four fundamental topics are: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Once we have these down, we can explore all the fun directions biology can take us in!
Of course, it's not fun if you feel completely lost and left out of the Biology conversation.
