Overview of Basic Math

Mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships in our world.  There are patterns everywhere we look, even in our homes, such as cats and dogs have four legs and people only have two.  Math can give meaing to simple concepts we learn, like "how much" of something we have, what the correct amount of change we get from the grocery store clerk should be, or what it means to split that cookie in half or even quarters.  These are rudimentary life skills to understand, and our basic mathematics tutoring examines these fundamentals: Patterns and whole numbers, multiplication and division, and fractions and decimals.  By using online tutoring, we can help you get these areas down pat!

Patterns and Whole Numbers

An important mathematical skill that most of us develop early on is the recognition of number patterns.  By learning techniques such as skip counting (i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8 and 5, 10, 15, 20), you will become skilled in areas such as computation.  The development process of being able to identify relationships between numbers, such as "1 more", "1 less", and "10 less" is important in understanding fundamental processes of math as well.  If you don't know what 1 more or 10 less means, don't worry - we have math tutor to explain this areajust for you!  We will also utilize  the number chart in your tutoring sessions, because it can be used in developing skills around number patterns and numerical relationships.

Multiplication and Division

Next, we will introduce you to the concept of partitioning and measurement.  You may or may not recognize the use of these names at this particular level, however, the meanings of this type of division will provide you a better understanding of the overall process.  Let's say it like this: If you have soccer practice 3 times a week, how many practices are there in a month? In a year?  You need to know your multiplication tables to answer that one.  If you need to divide that 9-inch cookie three ways among yourself and your younger sister and brother, how much cookie do each of you get?  Hint, hint: division problems do happen in everyday life, so let's learn it!  Because math is such a visual area of learning, visual representations and basic visual aids are also used by your homework tutors to teach the concepts of multiplication and division as well.

Fractions and Decimals

Don't put away your math books yet, because we've got one more section to tackle!  In this final area of basic math, we introduce you to the concepts of fractions and mixed numbers.  Say you are baking those cookies for your family and the recipe calls for three-fourths cup of sugar and one and one-third cups of butter.  If you don't get the right amount in the mix, your cookies may taste terrible!  Not only will you get fractions and mixed numbers down pat with your online math tutor, you will learn how to calculate decimals building on the same fundamentals used when calculating whole numbers.  Additionally, you will be taught to using visual representations such as 10 x 10 grids and 100 x 100 grids.

Once you've got these three areas of Basic Mathematics conquered with a little math tutoring, you are ready to expand your bright mind and move on to getting yourself an online Pre Algebra Tutor!
