The Math and Science Struggle
Taking a look at the current courses that students take today, there really isn't much deviation from what was taught decades ago. The core subjects of Math, Science, English and history are still there and will always be there. One interesting trend over the course of time is that kids continue to struggle in Math and Science. The problem with this struggle and the resulting incompetence is that in a global marketplace, this will make the United States less competitive.
So what can be done to tackle this problem? How does the United States get itself back on track? What is being taught in the classroom is becoming an increasingly challenging environment for teachers. Teachers deal with smaller budgets, larger classrooms, and with the No Child Left Behind initiative, more stringent testing guidelines. Unfortunately, all these things do not lend themselves to a good environment to teach Math and Science. Ideally, a student needs a quality one-to-one environment for learning both of these subjects, which is obviously not going to happen in the classroom. And we honestly can't expect teachers to remain after school indefinitely to help out each and every student, so how do we take care of this? A simple, cost-efficient solution is using online tutoring. Students usually get home from school and hop on the computer anyway, so why not have them fit some math tutoring or science tutoring time into that? The beauty of online tutoring is that it can all be done from home, with the student using a headset with a microphone and a virtual whiteboard to communicate with their online math tutor or science tutor.
We are living in a very advanced technological time right now. While the fundamentals of what are being taught and how it is being taught haven't changed much, that doesn't mean that the learning has to stop there. Learning today means that you can take the classroom home, and let your struggling student get the homework help that they need to strengthen their math and science skills.
